Tua Tagovailoa (hip) doubtful for Jets clash; Dolphins expected to start QB Tyler Huntley in Week 18

The Dolphins head into Week 18 with their playoff hopes still alive, but they’re likely to face the New York Jets without their starting quarterback.

Tua Tagovailoa, dealing with a hip injury, is not expected to suit up on Sunday, according to head coach Mike McDaniel. Speaking to reporters on Friday, McDaniel confirmed that Miami is preparing for Tyler Huntley to make his second consecutive start in place of Tagovailoa.

“We’re approaching the game as if Snoop (Huntley) will be starting,” McDaniel said. “Looking back at how we handled last week, it was probably the right call. At this point, I see it as unlikely that Tua will be available.”

Tagovailoa has been officially listed as doubtful after participating in practice on a limited basis throughout the week.

Huntley showed improvement in his Week 17 performance, leading Miami’s offense to a 20-3 victory over the Browns. Despite the final score, it wasn’t an easy win, and Huntley’s contributions were key. His progress under McDaniel’s system has been noticeable, particularly with more time to adjust and practice as a starter.

McDaniel expressed confidence in Huntley’s ability to step up again, especially against a Jets team that has nothing to lose as they wrap up their season. This confidence explains why the Dolphins are preparing as though Tagovailoa will remain sidelined. However, Tagovailoa’s injury history is a growing concern, especially given his previous significant hip issues.

Speaking on Friday, Tagovailoa admitted his frustration with the situation. He said he believed he was ready to play in Week 17 but wasn’t medically cleared. The quarterback is optimistic about returning if the Dolphins make the postseason, saying, “No ifs, ands, or buts about it.”

According to McDaniel, the team isn’t rushing Tagovailoa back because his condition isn’t just about managing pain — it’s about strength and functionality. McDaniel explained that Tagovailoa is currently unable to perform at the necessary level and that forcing a return could risk a more serious injury.

“It’s not just about pain tolerance,” McDaniel said. “Tua wishes it were simply a pain issue. This is a matter of strength — having the ability to do what’s required on the field and protecting himself from potential harm. It’s a unique muscle issue stemming from the hip.”

As the Dolphins prepare for a crucial game, they’ll be hoping for a win, a Broncos loss to clear their path to the playoffs, and a positive outlook for Tagovailoa’s recovery. Anything less could leave Miami facing a disappointing end to their season.
