Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol, making his availability for Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys highly unlikely.
“It’s going to be tough for him to play this week,” head coach Nick Sirianni stated on Friday before the team’s final practice session.
Hurts sustained a concussion during the Eagles’ Week 16 loss to the Washington Commanders and has not participated in practice since. With Hurts sidelined, Kenny Pickett is poised to make his first start of the season and his debut as an Eagle.
The former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback stepped in during last week’s game, completing 14 of 24 passes for 143 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. Although the offense struggled at times, Sirianni expressed confidence in Pickett, noting that a full week of preparation with the starters will be beneficial.
“He’s had a solid week of practice,” Sirianni said. “Getting reps with the guys he’ll play alongside, and running plays against the defense we’re facing, makes a significant difference. It’s been a productive week.”
Pickett, who has been managing a rib injury, declared himself “ready to go” on Thursday after practicing fully. He plans to wear extra padding for protection but does not anticipate any limitations.
The young quarterback highlighted the importance of working with top targets A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith to refine timing and chemistry after some missteps during his first extended action with the team.
“Timing is everything for a quarterback, especially in this league,” Pickett said. “Understanding how receivers come out of their cuts and track the ball on deep throws is critical. The more reps I get with them, the better.”
Heading into Week 17, the Eagles hold a slim 4% chance of securing the NFC’s top seed. To achieve it, they need a win over Dallas and losses by both the Lions and Vikings in Week 18. However, Philadelphia can clinch the NFC East division title with either a victory or a loss by the Commanders.
