A win on Saturday, coupled with some favorable outcomes from other games on Sunday, could propel the Bengals back into the playoffs.
However, the bigger question looming over Cincinnati is how the team plans to maintain its success beyond the 2024 season. This offseason, whether they reach the postseason or not, decisions about the futures of Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins will take center stage.
Week 18’s matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers could potentially mark the last time Joe Burrow lines up with his elite wide-receiver duo—a reality not lost on the Bengals’ star quarterback.
“It’s definitely a possibility,” Burrow acknowledged during Tuesday’s press conference. “Not something I’m thrilled about, but I wouldn’t say that’s part of the plan.”
Burrow’s support for keeping Chase and Higgins in Cincinnati has been clear. Both wideouts faced contract-related tensions earlier this year—Chase sat out training camp, while Higgins, unhappy with his franchise tag, requested a trade at one point.
Though both players suited up for the Bengals in 2024, their long-term futures remain unresolved. Burrow, however, has consistently pushed for their retention, using his platform to send a subtle message to the organization.
“When a great player leaves, you always wish you could’ve found a way to keep them,” Burrow said. “You can’t build a team by consistently letting top talent walk out the door. That’s why getting deals done early is so critical.”
Burrow himself has had a standout 2024 season, leading the league with career-high stats in completions (423), passing yards (4,641), and touchdowns (42) as the regular season winds down.
Chase, meanwhile, has shattered franchise records for receptions (117) and receiving yards (1,612) in a single season. He’s also in the running for the league’s receiving triple crown, leading in touchdowns with 16.
Higgins, despite being sidelined by injuries in 2024, has still made a significant impact. In 11 games, he’s totaled 69 receptions for 858 yards and 10 touchdowns, including a stellar Week 17 performance with 11 catches, 131 yards, and three scores against the Denver Broncos.
As Burrow hinted, the cost of keeping Chase and Higgins has only risen since last offseason.
Whether or not Saturday will mark the final chapter for this dynamic trio remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: Burrow firmly believes they belong together in Cincinnati.
